Deaths of Mrs Yvonne Evans and Mr Leslie Brooks.

Mrs Yvonne Evans died in the early hours of this morning (22nd September) after a long illness. She formerly lived in Eyhorne Mews and was for many years the Chairman of the Governors of Hollingbourne School where she also worked as a volunteer librarian. Her last recorded visit to Hollingbourne was in July when she attended the events to mark the retirement of Mr Ralph Baldock after 28 years as Headmaster. She was also a former Parish Clerk.

Yvonne was disabled and lived for many years in a specially adapted flat above the garages in Eyhorne Mews. It had a special lift from one of the garages into her living room. In recent years she had lived at the Eastfield Nursing Home in Maidstone but kept in touch with village events.

Mrs Evans’ husband Tom died almost 30 years ago whilst on holiday in France.

Update : The funeral has been arranged for Friday 20th October in All Saints’ Church in Hollingbourne at 9.30am. It will be followed by a private cremation at Charing Crematorium.


Mr Leslie Brooks (87) passed away after a long illness on 20th September. He live next to Lime Kiln Cottage on Hollingbourne Hill and has many relatives in the village.

Born in Maidstone 1930, Worked at Dewhurst Butchers. Moved to top of Hollingbourne Hill when he married Sybil Davison, then moved to Lime Kiln cottage halfway down the hill in 1953. Worked locally as chimney sweep, gardening & mowing etc, also decorating & odd building jobs. Always led a quiet life had very few ambitions or social life but did do grass track motor bike racing in his earlier years & loved fishing.

Update : The funeral has been arranged for Wednesday 18th October at 11am at Vinter’s Park Crematorium.
