Maidstone Borough Council has been carrying out a series of local consultations on likely spending cuts to the annual expenditure of the Council. Although the public meetings end on 31st October and none are near Hollingbourne, MBC has only advised Hollingbourne Parish Council of the consultation.
Previous budget cuts have meant that the street lights in Hollingbourne and other villages are no longer funded out of the general Council Tax but are funded by the Parish Precept which also supports other local services. The latest cost saving is the closure of the Hollingbourne recycling site in Station Lane.
Altogether MBC are trying to save £4.2 million or about one fifth of the annual expenditure of £20 million which includes £1.6 million for office accomomodation and £3.9 million for Corporate Services. These are the two largest areas of expenditure and are more than double the costs of street cleaning and refuse collection combined.
