Hollingbourne has been twinned with Templeuve en Peveule near Lille in France since March 2013 and each year so far a coach from Hollingbourne has gone to the town for their Armistice Ceremony which takes place on a major public holiday so it is a major event. Hollingbourne’s Twinning Committee has been invited again to the 2017 event on Saturday 11th November. In order to gauge support from Hollingbourne for this day trip, anybody interested is asked to contact Derek Davison on Tel 880650 or any member of the Twinning Committee.
The programme is expected to be much the same as in previous years as follows:-
Travel from Hollingbourne via the Channel Tunnel and then to Templeuve which is around 90 minutes from Calais.
Complimentary coffee and croissants on arrival in a local cafe.
March behind Town band with hundreds of others from Town Square to local cemetery to lay wreaths on Commonwealth War Graves Commission graves.
Formal ceremony in the Town Square with the Mayor and other dignitaries, schoolchildren, and hundreds of local residents.
Civic reception with a vin d’honneur in the historic Town Hall or other local building.
Five or six course lunch with wine, entertainment, and dancing until 6pm ish.
In previous years the cost has been c£30 per head for the lunch with wine plus the cost of travel. In previous years using a coach the departure from Hollingbourne has been around 6.30am and the arrival back has been about 10pm. At this stage no transport arrangements have been made and the possibility of going by car if there are insufficient numbers for a coach is being considered.
There will also be Remembrance Day events in Hollingbourne on Sunday 12th November.
The Twinning Committee is also considering the possibility of a smaller scale visit to Templeuve on Thursday 9th November to lay wreaths on the graves of the British WW2 soldiers in the town cemetery.
Pictured below are some of the pictures from previous events.
