Parish Councillor Alan Bennett (63) died this afternoon in Maidstone Hospital. He had not enjoyed good health for many years and leaves a wife, Anne who is a former nurse. Mr Bennett lived in Eyhorne Street and was active in many local organisations including All Saints’ Church, the Royal British Legion, and the Parish Council. He was also a keen member of Kent County Cricket Club and a regular attender at the Saint Lawrence Ground in Canterbury and an avid supporter of Maidstone United Football Club.
Prior to his retirement he worked as journalist and most recently on the Downs Mail and previously on the Herts Advertiser in Saint Albans’s and on newspapers in Buckinghamshire.
Among his many activities included opening the Village Fete in 2011 with fellow residents Arthur C. Clarke and Barry Humphreys.
The funeral details are to follow. It is understood that the funeral may be delayed as he died less than 24 hours after being admitted to hospital and that the matter is with the local coroner. Alan previously made known that he wanted his ashes to be scattered at the Saint Lawrence Ground in Canterbury of Kent County Cricket Club.
UPDATE: A private cremation for family and close friends has been arranged for Friday 16th November at 2.45pm at Vintners Park. The cremation will be preceded by a church service at All Saints’ Church in Hollingbourne at 1.30pm and followed by a reception in the Village Hall. The Cooperative Funeral Service (Tel 753033) is making the arrangements. No flowers by request but donations to All Saints’ Church and the Project 100 scheme to plant 100 trees on Hollingbourne Meadows Trust land to mark the centenary of the end of WW1 are invited. Both causes were close to Alan’s heart. A retiring collection at the end of the church service will be shared equally between the two causes.
